• Teaching Strategy:Use your colored square tiles and graph paper to introduce the concept of factors. Ask the students to make as many different rectangles as they can for various numbers. the dimensions of the rectangles will be the factors of the number you give them. Students can use graph paper to shade in all of the different rectangles that show the factors. This activity will also build an understanding of area as length times width.
  • A multiplication table can also be used to teach factors. Ask students to place colored counters on a given product. They cover that product wherever it appears in the table. Then they follow the row and column to find the factors for the given product.
